Celebrate the Spirit of Giving at Sykesville’s Happy-Thon Holiday Event

Last Updated 10/15/2024

As the holiday season draws near, it’s easy to get swept up in to-do lists, decorations, and gift shopping. But in Sykesville, we believe the holidays are about more than just celebrations — they’re about giving back. This is the heartbeat of our Sykesville Happy-Thon Holiday Event.

What is Happy-Thon?

Happy-Thon is more than just an event; it’s a movement. It’s a chance to come together as a community and uplift those in need during the season of joy. In 2023, with your help, we raised over $14,000 and provided gifts and clothing for 68 children from 28 families. Since 2015, Happy-Thon has grown from supporting 14 families to dozens, creating meaningful connections across the community.

This effort is made possible through the Downtown Sykesville Connection (DSC), a nonprofit organization committed to fostering community engagement. With guidance from the counselors at Piney Ridge Elementary School, we ensure every contribution goes where it’s needed most.

Downtown Sykesville will be buzzing with holiday cheer, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to spread love. But at its core, Happy-Thon is about reminding ourselves of the true meaning of the holidays: community, connection, and generosity.

Why We Give

The holidays can be a difficult time for many — from families struggling to make ends meet to individuals experiencing loneliness. That’s where small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Each donation or hour volunteered at Happy-Thon is a gift that ripples beyond the holiday season.

Consider donating toys for children who might not have a gift to unwrap or contributing non-perishable food items for those facing food insecurity. Every little bit matters. And as you give, you’ll find that the joy comes full circle—there’s nothing like the magic of knowing you made someone’s day brighter.

How You Can Get Involved

There are countless ways to participate in Happy-Thon, whether it's as a family, with friends, or even on your own. Here’s how you can join in the spirit:

  • Donate: Contribute toys, food, or gently-used winter clothing to collection bins around town.
  • Volunteer: Help with event setup, wrap gifts, or assist with activities on the day of the event.
  • Spread the Word: Share Happy-Thon on social media and invite others to join the movement.

Together, We Create Joy

Happy-Thon is not just about giving things—it’s about giving hope. It’s about showing up for each other, especially for those who need it most. When we come together as a community, the smallest actions add up to something greater than we ever imagined. This holiday season, let’s fill hearts, not just stockings.

Join us at Happy-Thon and be part of something meaningful. Because in the end, the holidays aren't about what we receive—they’re about what we give.
