Inspired by Roland L. Freeman's groundbreaking work, A Communion of the Spirits: African-American Quilters, Preservers, and Their Stories, this Juneteenth community art project celebrates the rich tradition of quilting as a form of storytelling, cultural preservation, and connection.
Throughout history, African American quilts have served as living records of family stories, community experiences, resilience, and hope. In that spirit, community members are invited to contribute to a collective quilt by either bringing a meaningful piece of fabric from home or creating a design on a fabric square provided at the event. Each contribution will represent a unique story, memory, or reflection.
Our project partner, Baldwin's Dream, will assemble the individual pieces into a single community quilt, weaving together the voices and experiences of all who participate. The quilt's progress will be shared online, allowing the community to follow its journey from individual stories to a collective work of art.
Together, we will create a lasting symbol of remembrance, freedom, connection, and community—one stitch at a time.
