Celebrating Heritage and Milestones: Gisselle Gryzmala on 10 Years of HeadMasters Grooming Salon for Men and Hispanic Heritage

Last Updated 10/7/2024

As we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, I had the pleasure of interviewing Gisselle Gryzmala, owner of HeadMasters Grooming Salon for Men, located on Main Street in Sykesville. This year marks a significant milestone for Gisselle and her family, as HeadMasters celebrates 10 successful years in business. Gisselle reflects on the influence of her Hispanic roots, the importance of family, and the joy of watching her business grow in the heart of this amazing community.

A Decade of Growth in Sykesville

When Gisselle and her mother opened the doors of HeadMasters 10 years ago, Sykesville wasn’t the bustling town it is today. “Honestly, Sykesville was the last place on my list,” Gisselle shared. “There was nothing happening down there. You could practically see tumbleweeds.” But taking a chance on Main Street paid off. “Within a year, the town began to transform. Businesses opened up, and it’s been amazing to watch it flourish.”

Today, HeadMasters is surrounded by a community of women-owned businesses, something Gisselle finds inspiring. “I love that so many businesses here are owned by women. It’s an empowering environment to be a part of.”

Heritage at the Heart of It All

As a proud Hispanic business owner, Gisselle is deeply connected to her heritage. HeadMasters is co-owned by Gisselle and her mother, both of whom bring their cultural background into the heart of the business. “We’re Hispanic-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned,” she explains. “That allows us to connect with so many different people who come into the shop.”

The business has naturally attracted a diverse clientele and staff. “Right now, we have four Hispanic employees, including me and my mom. It’s amazing to see how our culture has influenced the atmosphere at HeadMasters.”

Family, Traditions, and Teaching the Next Generation

Gisselle’s family is a beautiful blend of cultures. Her mother is from Mexico, and her father is of Polish and Italian descent. While Gisselle didn’t always embrace her Hispanic heritage growing up, she now proudly passes it on to her two children, Aspyn and Hudson.

“One tradition I’ve definitely passed down is the love for celebrations,” she laughs. “My kids are only three and one and a half, but they’ve already had the biggest parties! My family has always made birthdays and events feel special, and I love continuing that with my kids.”

Language is another important part of their household. “I’m not fluent in Spanish, but my mom is, and she speaks it with Aspyn and Hudson. It’s important to me that they grow up learning the language, something I regret not embracing when I was younger.”

Empowering Others Through Heritage

Gisselle’s path as a Hispanic business owner has been shaped by her journey of self-acceptance. “Growing up, I wasn’t proud of being different. I didn’t like my tan skin or being Hispanic. But when I started doing pageants, that changed. I began to embrace who I was, and now I love telling people I’m of Mexican descent.”

As a former Miss Maryland, Gisselle uses her platform to highlight diversity and empower others. “I’ve learned that being different is something to be proud of, and I want to pass that message on to other young Hispanic women and girls.”

Celebrating 10 Years and Looking Forward

As HeadMasters celebrates its 10th anniversary, Gisselle looks back with pride and gratitude. “If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d be where I am now, I wouldn’t have believed it. I was only 21 when we opened, and I had no idea what the future would hold. But by the grace of God, we’ve made it here, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Gisselle’s advice to aspiring Hispanic entrepreneurs? “If you’re thinking about starting something, just do it. It’s scary, but the other side of fear is pure joy. I couldn’t be happier to have taken that leap of faith.”

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Gisselle’s story is a testament to the power of embracing your roots, following your passion, and building a legacy for the future. Here’s to 10 more years of success for HeadMasters Grooming Salon for Men!
