A New Main Street Favorite Is About to Open Its Doors in Sykesville in August 2025!

📍 Location: 7611 Main Street, Sykesville, MD

There’s a new aroma about to join the delicious scents of downtown — and trust us, it’s worth getting excited about. Uncle Joe’s, a soul-satisfying spot blending comfort food, community spirit, and the charm of small-town service, is officially joining our Main Street family!

Meet the Family Behind the Flavor

Uncle Joe’s Deli and Market is co-owned by Joe “Uncle Joe” Gallagher, 27, of Sykesville, alongside his sister Colleen Wittig, 33, and her husband Tyler Wittig, 32. The trio all live on Sykesville’s Main Street, and “Uncle Joe” is now proudly uncle to not one but two little ones—adorable Juni (pictured here with Uncle Joe, left, and parents Tyler and Colleen, right) and her brand-new baby sister Lucy. This new venture is more than just a business—it’s a true family story, perfectly aligned with the Main Street movement’s Eat. Love. Play. spirit, where young families grow their lives and their livelihoods side by side, right in the heart of downtown.

The market will sell produce, meats, cheeses, pasta, sauces, and other grocery staples—and will proudly carry local goods from Sykesville’s own farmers market vendors. The closest grocery store is a 15-minute drive away, so Uncle Joe’s will fill a meaningful need right in the heart of town.

Their goal? To bring a convenient, flavorful, and community-focused food experience to Main Street. The deli aims to debut with a menu of 10 to 12 cold sandwiches, with plans to expand once they settle into the rhythm of operations.

Joe has worked in the restaurant industry his entire adult life, discovering his passion for kitchen work during a stint at The Local Motive, the bar and restaurant operated by Colleen and Tyler just steps away on Main Street. Colleen and Tyler met at Liberty High School in Eldersburg and reconnected while bartending at the former Market Tavern, the predecessor to The Local Motive.

From Shell to Showcase

“It’s been really fun putting it together,” Colleen said. “The space is beautiful. The Downtown Sykesville Connection (DSC) completely renovated the space that we’re going to be in, and it’s looking very nice. It was just an empty shell when we walked in there, but now we have a bunch of our equipment moved in.”

The interior of Uncle Joe’s was completely renovated and upgraded, thanks in part to the Restore State grant awarded and administered by the DSC and DSC funds. The funding allowed the transformation of the building into a modern, state-of-the-art commercial space. The owners have been working hard to turn it into a fabulous deli that will contribute to creating a Sykesville Main Street ecosystem.

Their beautiful new storefront—restored and styled with help from the DSC’s award of the Façade Improvement Grant Program—is a perfect reflection of what makes Sykesville so special: a blend of historic charm and fresh energy.
