Barrier-Free: Our Partner in Smiles & Creative Inclusion

Downtown Sykesville Connection is proud to partner with Barrier‑Free, a visionary 501(c)(3) nonprofit that champions inclusive art, self‑advocacy, and social programming for neurodivergent adults. Located right here in historic Downtown Sykesville, they are truly our Partner in Smiles—bringing joy, creativity, and equity into everything we do.

A Home for Our JEDI Committee

Barrier‑Free has graciously hosts the meetings of our Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) committee, providing a welcoming and accessible space where ideas flourish, futures are shaped, and Barrier- Free members can contribute. Their commitment to inclusivity mirrors our own goals and helps our team stay connected to the pulse of the community.

Creative Allies During Community Cleanup Day

When it was time for watering, window‑painting removal ,and touch‑ups across Main Street, Barrier‑Free came through with both hands up. Their members jumped right in—rolling sleeves, sharing laughs, and powering through the work. It was more than just cleaning up; it was a reminder of how art, service, and belonging come together in our town.

Building Visibility for Downtown Businesses

Beyond the events and committee work, Barrier-Free’s presence around town is a friendly reminder that inclusion matters. Several of their dedicated members work directly with local businesses—a real, ongoing partnership that enriches our Main Street and strengthens community bonds.

Celebrating and Advocating Together

Barrier-Free also works hand-in-hand with the Downtown Sykesville Connection by sponsoring community events and teaming up with us for inclusive outreach campaigns. Whether it’s showing up in vibrant pride colors to celebrate diversity or creating powerful storefront art to honor cultural history, Barrier-Free amplifies the spirit of welcome on Main Street. Their active presence—through both celebration and advocacy—helps ensure that every voice in Sykesville feels seen, heard, and valued.

Why Their Work Matters

  • They create opportunities for neurodivergent adults to learn, lead, and connect.

  • Their presence in meetings, cleanups, and public spaces ensures equity in action, not just words.

  • Their support helps us build a more inclusive, resilient, and joyful downtown—where everyone belongs.

Join us in celebrating Barrier-Free—and the big difference they make, every single day. We’re stronger together when smiles and service go hand in hand.
