A gallery where everyone belongs
Along the blue brick of 7611 Main Street, a once-quiet stretch of wall has become something living: a mirror-lined, frame-filled, joy-powered outdoor gallery where neighbors, visitors, artists, and passersby are all part of the story.
At the heart of it is a simple invitation, painted right on the wall:
“Lean in — Sykesville’s greatest treasure is looking back at you.”
And it means it.
This installation was never meant to be precious or exclusive. It was designed to feel like walking into a community living room — full of color, memory, humor, and warmth.
Some of the frames hold original works by Wade Forbes, Sykesville resident, Downtown Sykesville Connection fan, and a deeply thoughtful artist whose paintings capture the soul of this place — from the energy of the Farmers Market, to the resilience of Fire & Flood, to the layered beauty of Main Street itself.
Interwoven with Wade’s work are bold, joyful pieces created by our friends at Barrier-Free — artists who bring their full, brilliant selves to every brushstroke. Their work isn’t “included” as an afterthought. It is central to the story of this wall.
And then there’s the mirror.
Not tucked away.
Not subtle.
Right there, in a gilded frame.
Because in this gallery, you are part of the exhibit.
When you lean in, you don’t just see art — you see your own face among it. A reminder that creativity, belonging, and beauty aren’t something to observe from a distance. They are something you carry with you.
Art happening in real time
One of the most magical parts of this project has been watching it come to life.
Through a live time-lapse installation, visitors got to witness Wade Forbes painting directly on the wall — sketching, blocking color, layering detail — turning a blank blue canvas into a living, breathing story. You could walk by on a Tuesday and see one image taking shape… then come back on Friday and find a whole new chapter waiting for you.
That’s intentional.
Because Main Street, like art, is never finished.
It’s always becoming.

Powered by community
This outdoor gallery is the result of many hands and hearts working together.
It was supported by Carroll Arts Center funding, fueled by the vision of the Downtown Sykesville Connection Design Committee, and made possible through the generosity of community members who donated frames, turning their own pieces of home into a shared public experience.
And a special thank-you goes to PTC Home Services, our go-to partner for public art installations, for helping us make this wall not just beautiful — but safe, solid, and built to last.
Why this wall matters
This isn’t just decoration.
This is placemaking.
This is belonging.
This is Main Street doing what Main Streets do best — turning everyday spaces into places where people feel seen, valued, and invited.
It’s where a passerby becomes a participant.
Where a reflection becomes recognition.
Where art becomes a conversation.
So come by 7611 Main Street.
Lean in.
Smile at yourself.
Spot a painting that feels like home.
Because art belongs to all of us — and we all belong in art. 💛
