Celebrate Diwali in Sykesville: A Journey of Light and Community
As the days grow shorter and the air crisper, we come together in the heart of Sykesville to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a time-honored tradition for millions across the world, a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. This year, we are honored to celebrate this vibrant festival right here in our own community, thanks to the generous contributions of local Indian families, businesses, and the gracious hospitality of St. Paul's UMC, working closely with Reverend Mary Ka Kanahan, to provide a beautiful space for our gathering.
For Suvarna, Chaitanya, Harini, and their families, who moved to Sykesville within the last few years, Diwali remains a time for family, festivity, and cherished traditions like creating rangoli, lighting diyas, and performing pooja together. Although certain traditions have adapted to their new home—such as using smaller fireworks in front of their homes to respect local building standards—the spirit of Diwali remains vibrant. This year is especially meaningful, as they will have the unique opportunity to celebrate Diwali with friends from other cultural backgrounds. As Suvarna shared, “This would be a very special and unique experience for us. We never thought we would get an opportunity to celebrate Diwali across different cultures.”
We are grateful for the beautiful decorations that Suvarna, Chaitanya, and Harini are bringing from their homes, which add a truly authentic touch to our celebration. To complement these personal contributions, Kristen Cook from Bluebird Yoga & Wellness generously purchased additional decorations to ensure the space is filled with warmth and light. Reflecting on her involvement, Kristen shared, “It’s so important to celebrate the richness and diversity of our community. I can’t wait to learn from and celebrate with our Indian neighbors and friends.” This shared effort beautifully reflects the spirit of Diwali—a festival where every light joins together to create a radiant, shared glow.
Equally generous is Bhavin Patel, who, on behalf of Kinara, is donating food for a portion of our celebration. Diwali is about coming together over food, stories, and laughter, and we are thrilled that Kinara’s offerings will allow us to share in this communal joy.
While our conversations may not capture every detail of the cherished traditions shared by Suvarna, Chaitanya, Harini, and their families, Diwali is about more than just lights and festivities. It’s about the bonds that unite us. For these families, Diwali is deeply meaningful, a time for celebrating victory over darkness and for uniting people—a sentiment they are eager to share with the Sykesville community: “We hope to share the main ideology—Victory of Good over Evil, Bringing people together, Unity.”
We invite you, the Sykesville community, to join us in this journey of light and understanding on Friday, November 1st, from 5 pm to 6 pm. Come, immerse yourself in the traditions of mehndi, diyas, and the beautiful sights and sounds of Diwali. The celebration will begin outside St. Paul's UMC with opportunities to explore, participate, and appreciate these time-honored customs. Following the outdoor festivities, there will be a smaller, invitation-only gathering indoors, graciously coordinated with the support of Reverend Mary Ka Kanahan, for an intimate experience filled with food, music, and heartfelt moments.
It’s clear that our community is richer for the diversity we share, and we couldn’t be more excited to embrace this beautiful tradition here in Sykesville. Your presence will help us make this event as warm and bright as the festival itself.
