Learn From My Mistake: A Composting Journey by Sarah
About two years ago, my family and I decided to remove the bushes in front of our house. Instead of disposing of them, we thought, “Why not compost them?” Fast forward to a few days ago when I was turning our compost pile. There, buried deep at the bottom, I discovered a massive chunk of bush roots. Without hesitation, I pulled it out and tossed it into the forest next to our house. Lesson learned: next time, we’ll think twice before composting something quite so enormous!
Need tips on what NOT to compost?
Some things you can't compost
- Coal or charcoal ashes
- Cat and dog droppings
- Colored paper
- Lime
- Meat
- Grease
- Bones
- Diseased plants
- Sod
- Milk
- Cheese
- Bird droppings (from wild birds)
- Walnuts
- Cooking oil
- weeds
- ALL PLANTS SHOULD BE PESTICIDE FREE
And, learn from my mistake, cut up or mulch yard waste before adding to compost so it will break down faster!
